The origins of the name of GAETA are shrouded in myth: from the vicissitudes of Ulysses to Cajeta, the nurse of Aeneas buried in this place; in Kajatas, a cleft in the rock or a safe harbour where, according to the Greek sailors, to land in the event of stormy seas.
Since then Gaeta has gone through various vicissitudes around the great Angevin - Aragonese castle built in 1223 by Frederick II of Swabia and enlarged over time by the kings of the kingdom of Naples belonging to the dynasty of Aragonese origin.
Over the centuries Gaeta has been identified as the "key" of southern Italy, hence the need to protect oneself better and better: this is how the fortifications of the ducal period (X - XI century), of the Swabians (XVIII century) and the post-unification ones. All these fortifications have undergone over 10 sieges, leaving indelible that of 1860-1861 during which the process of national unity ends and the Italian navy was born, right in the waters of the Gulf.
Today the city projected on the sea, in addition to the past, looks to the future: it houses extraordinary works of past centuries, hosts contemporary art exhibitions of the highest level, promotes the spread of Street Art.
